How do I get answers during a live interview?

Press Get answer (Ctrl+Shift+J) when the interviewer asks something. A card starts at once: a first sentence to start speaking with, then the answer in three or four short beats you can glance at. You can also type a question or analyse your screen for a coding problem.

The strip

During a session Phantum is a thin strip at the top centre of your screen, just under the webcam, so your eyes stay near the camera while you read. You can drag it anywhere; Ctrl+Shift+Home sends it back.

The top line shows what Get answer will answer: the interviewer's latest question, or a note that they are still speaking or that their words are being transcribed.

Three ways to ask

  • Get answer: answers the interviewer's latest question. Press it while they are still talking and the card starts with what has been said so far.
  • Type: opens a box, filled in with the latest question, so you can fix a word or ask your own. Up to 500 characters.
  • Analyse screen: reads a coding problem, a diagram or a multiple-choice question off your screen. Code comes with a copy button and its complexity.

Reading a card

  • Q: the question the card answers.
  • The lead: one sentence to start speaking with while you read the rest.
  • Beats: the answer in three or four short points, in your own words.
  • A highlighted number: the one figure worth saying out loud.
  • A blue blank such as [team size]: a fact only you know. Phantum leaves it blank rather than invent it.
  • "Composed for your role, adapt the details": a story built for your role because your résumé and notes did not have one. Make it yours before you tell it.

Ending the session

Press End session when the interview is over. Phantum transcribes the last few seconds it heard before it closes the session, and your minutes stop counting.
